A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
