Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such treatments should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
