The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
